DA VANCE: NORBERTO TORRES SENTENCED TO 25 YEARS IN STATE PRISON FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of NORBERTO TORRES, 47, to 25 years in state prison and 25 years of post-release supervision for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl in June 2013. On October 21, 2014, TORRES pleaded guilty in New York Supreme Court to one count each of Criminal Sexual Act, Attempted Criminal Sexual Act, and Sexual Abuse, all in the First Degrees.

“Norberto Torres committed despicable acts against a defenseless little girl who was entrusted to his care,” said District Attorney Vance. “Now, thanks in large part to the bravery of the victim and her family in coming forward and aiding our investigation, he will serve many years in prison. I thank the prosecutors in my Office’s Child Abuse Unit, who handle some of the most difficult, draining criminal cases, and are wholly dedicated to protecting the youngest and most vulnerable victims in our city. I urge anyone who believes that a child may be at risk to call our Child Abuse Hotline at (212) 335-4308.”

According to the defendant’s guilty plea and documents filed in court, TORRES was entrusted with the care of a 5-year-old girl from the afternoon of June 14, 2013, through the next morning. During that time, TORRES sexually assaulted the child, who disclosed the abuse to her mother soon after TORRES returned her to her mother’s custody.

At the time of the sexual assault, TORRES was on parole for murdering a nun in the Bronx in 1987.

Assistant District Attorneys Colleen Walsh and Lauren Stabile prosecuted the case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg, Chief of the Child Abuse Unit, and Executive District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division. Special Victims Social Worker Sarah Strole of the Witness Aid Services Unit assisted with the case.

District Attorney Vance thanked Detective Michael Rama of the NYPD’s Manhattan Special Victims Squad.
