DA VANCE: JOHN WOODY SENTENCED TO 21 ½-TO-23 YEARS IN PRISON FOR SLASHING EX-WIFE IN FRONT OF THEIR THREE CHILDREN

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., today announced the sentencing of JOHN WOODY, 41, to 21 ½-to-23 years in state prison for repeatedly slashing his ex-wife in front of their three children in July 2013. On September 10, 2014, WOODY pleaded guilty in New York State Supreme Court to Assault and Burglary in the First Degrees, as well as Aggravated Criminal Contempt and numerous other charges.

“John Woody launched a campaign of terror against his ex-wife, culminating in a vicious attack in front of their three young children,” said District Attorney Vance. “As we see time and again, victims of domestic violence face the most danger when trying to leave an abusive relationship. As this survivor tried to cut off contact with her ex-husband, he continually defied orders of protection in an attempt to intimidate her into silence. Not only did Woody physically and emotionally scar the victim, his violent actions also scarred the children who were forced to witness an unthinkable attack against their mother. I urge anyone in an abusive relationship to call my Office’s Domestic Violence Hotline at 212-335-4308, or visit the Manhattan Family Justice Center at 80 Centre Street. Help is available – you are not alone.”

According to the defendant’s guilty plea, at approximately 6:20 p.m. on July 8, 2013, WOODY followed his ex-wife, who was with their three children, into her apartment building on the Lower East Side. When the family reached their floor, WOODY attacked his ex-wife, repeatedly slashing her face, neck, and back as the children stood nearby. The victim was hospitalized and received numerous stitches. The defendant was apprehended approximately 30 hours later after attempting to evade police officers.

WOODY additionally pleaded guilty to placing a threatening phone call to the victim in the weeks before the assault in violation of a Criminal Court Order of Protection stemming from earlier domestic violence incidents. WOODY similarly pleaded guilty to threatening the victim through a third party while he was incarcerated at Rikers Island after his July 2013 arrest.

Assistant District Attorney Robert Ferrari handled the prosecution of this case under the supervision of Assistant District Attorney Armand Durastanti, Chief of Trial Bureau 40, and Executive Assistant District Attorney John Irwin, Chief of the Trial Division. Technology Analyst Mallory Evans assisted with the case.

District Attorney Vance thanked NYPD Detectives Antonio Esposito of the 9th Precinct, and Joseph Barbara of the Manhattan South Homicide Squad.
