On February 25, 2014, Dao Feng Lin was sentenced to 6 months jail plus 5 years post release supervision in addition to forfeiting over $80,000 after he pleaded guilty in June 2013 to defrauding numerous victims of an immigration scam that targeted members of the Chinese community. On May 7, 2013, Lin was indicted for allegedly stealing nearly $18,000 from his victims and collecting more than $40,000 in Medicaid and food stamp benefits to which he was not entitled. Lin was able to steal from the victims by falsely representing himself as someone who would be able to help friends and family members of Chinese immigrants apply for lawful status and work authorization in exchange for a fee of $1,350 per applicant. However, records show that no application was ever submitted for any of Lin’s victims. The defendant also claimed to have an income of only $6,000-9,600 on his benefit application and recertification form, which is well below what he actually earned.
