Five "Evil Spirits" Scammers Pleaded Guilty to Attempting to Steal Thousands of Dollars From Elderly Chinese Victim

Press Release

On October 1, 2013, Jun Liang, Xiumei He, Yao Chen, Huahuo Chen, and Jingchang Quan, were sentenced to 6 months jail after pleading guilty to Attempted Grand Larceny in the Third Degree and Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree for attempting to steal thousands of dollars from an elderly Chinese woman through a scam involving phony “evil spirits”. As admitted in their guilty plea, the defendants approached a 67-year-old woman on June 3, 2013, near 2 Elizabeth Street in Manhattan. The victim grew suspicious, and reported the scam to police officers at the NYPD’s 5th Precinct in Chinatown. Placing fake money and valuables into a bag, the woman met the defendants near Chatham Square. The defendants attempted to distract the woman with a “cleansing ritual” while the bag was concealed inside a different bag and handed to one of the defendants. All five defendants were immediately arrested, and the fake money and valuable were recovered.
