Philip Ward Sentenced to 18 Years-to-Life for 1989 Decapitation of Veronica Bowen

On April 5, 2013, Philip Ward was sentenced to 18 years-to-life in prison for the 1989 murder of Veronica Bowen. The victim’s naked and headless body was discovered on February 24, 1989, on the rooftop of Ward’s apartment building at Riverside Drive and West 148th Street. In 2011, the DA’s Forensic Sciences/Cold Case Unit and NYPD’s Cold Case Squad reopened the case as part of an exhaustive review of thousands of unsolved homicides dating back to the 1970s, which resulted in Ward’s indictment and eventual conviction. On March 22, 2013, Ward pleaded guilty to Murder in the Second Degree.
