How many positions are available?Open

Depending on budgetary constraints, each year there are approximately 40 openings each year for legal staff positions.

May I fax or e-mail my application?Open

No, we do not accept cover letters and resumes sent via fax or e-mail. All applications must be submitted online.


When is the deadline to submit my application if I am a law student?Open

All submissions must be received by 5:00pm (EST) on October 1st.

When is the deadline to submit my application if I am a lateral candidate?Open

Lateral applications are accepted year round; there is no deadline to submit an application.

When is the deadline to submit my application if I am a law clerk?Open

Applications are accepted beginning on August 1st. We strongly encourage clerks to apply before January 1st. Employment decisions are made on a rolling basis.


May I find out who will be conducting my interview in advance?Open

All interviews are conducted by Hiring Board members who are experienced Assistant District Attorneys. You will be given the name of your interviewer(s) at the time of your interview.


How long are the interviews?Open

First and panel interviews are approximately 30 minutes long. Executive panels are slightly longer. In all cases, applicants should anticipate being here for at least one hour.


What will I need to bring to my first interview?Open

Applicants should bring an official law school transcript to their interview. We do not require letters of recommendation. Please click here for more information.

How soon after my interviews can I expect to hear from the Legal Hiring Unit?Open

We interview and make offers on a rolling basis.  There is no exact timeframe in the application and interview process. We respond to all applications.

What if I have other offers and deadlines?Open

Please immediately inform the Legal Hiring Unit of any offers or deadlines you may receive during the interview process. We will make an effort to expedite your application in order to meet feasible deadlines.


What is a lateral candidate?Open

Lateral candidates are experienced attorneys who are currently practicing law. All attorneys who practiced law immediately after graduation and are currently clerking are considered lateral applicants. All lateral candidates must have passed the NYS Bar Examination prior to submitting an application. 


Does the office conduct phone or video-conferencing interviews?Open

No, all interviews are conducted in-person, either on-campus or in-house.

Where will the office be conducting on-campus interviews? What job fairs is the office attending?Open

The office participates in the on-campus interviewing process and table talk events at many law schools and job fairs throughout the year. Please check with your school for updated information about our participation. Where is the office located?Open

The office is located at One Hogan Place at the intersection of Centre Street and Leonard Street. The dedicated DANY entrance is on the south side of the Manhattan Criminal Court Building at 100 Centre Street. The Legal Hiring Unit is on the 8th floor in room 857. How can I submit an updated resume after I applied through the website?Open

To submit updated materials please call the Legal Hiring Unit at (212) 335-9361. Do not submit a new application if you already applied through our website and have a pending application.

What kind of background investigation is required? Open

Both entry level and experienced attorney candidates who accept an offer of employment must pass abackground investigationas a condition of their employment. The investigation includes a verification of name, residence, and educational background, as well as a criminal history check, interviews with references, close personal associates, former employers, co-workers, neighbors, landlords, and educational institutions, and a thorough check of credit, military, tax, and police records.

What happens if serious concerns are identified during the background investigation?Open

The office can withdraw an offer of employment if the investigation process reveals information that precludes a security and/or suitability clearance.
